Use of AI Firearm Detection Software in Schools
Section 1. School District Safety and Security
(A) From existing appropriations provided for school security purposes, the Department of Education may enter into a contract with a private vendor for firearm detection software. Such software shall:
(a) Detect and alert school district personnel and first responders about the presence of visible, unholstered firearms on school property;
(b) Be designated as qualified anti-terrorism technology under the federal SAFETY Act (6 U.S.C. Sec. 441 et seq.);
(c) Integrate with a school building’s security camera infrastructure;
(d) Be directly managed by the contracted vendor through a constantly monitored operations center that is staffed by highly trained analysts who can rapidly communicate possible threats to law enforcement and appropriate school district personnel; and
(e) Be developed in the United States without the use of any third-party or open-source data.
(B) The Department of Education may promulgate rules and regulations to effectuate the provisions of this section.
