- Common Cause Files a Whistleblower Complaint Against ALEC with the IRS.
- A former leader of the Internal Revenue Service, Marcus Owens, filed a complaint with the IRS alleging that the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has violated the terms of its nonprofit status by operating primarily for the private benefit of its corporate members. Read more here.
- On March 23, 2012 the Center for Media and Democracy filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board asking them to investigate whether the scholarships that ALEC gives to state legislators violate Wisconsin's ethics laws.
- On August 28, 2012 the Voters Legislative Transparency Project (VLTP) filed a third IRS complaint against ALEC. The VLTP complaint reinforces the two previous complaints and focuses on how "ALEC has – and still is – paying public officials for travel and lodging," outside of the scholarship program.
